Should she be signed by publisher It Books, the pop star and “X Factor” judge would join an elite club of headline-grabbers-turned-authors, including the Kardashians, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Lauren Conrad.
Pop superstar. X Factor judge. Author?
That’s right, Britney Spears is close to signing a book deal, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, with plans to write a novel.
Her rep confirms that It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins, which has released many popular concert tour musician memoirs (among them: autobiographies by Sammy Hagar, The Game, Slash and Motley Crue), is having “discussions” with the singer. (A rep for It would not confirm.)
A source tells THR Spears would pen a roman a clef for the publisher. The story would incorporate fictionalized versions of her own experiences, much like Lauren Conrad’s 2009 New York Times bestseller L.A. Candy, which was about a girl who moves to Los Angeles and becomes the star of a reality show. Conrad, who starred in The Hills, has written two more novels since.
Indeed, Spears is the latest in a growing cadre of headline-grabbers who dabble in books. They include the Kardashians and Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.
No word yet on when a Spears book may be released, but with the singer appearing on a network TV show (and being paid handsomely for it — in the vicinity of $15 million) and having sold nearly 100 million albums worldwide in her career, the advance is likely to be substantial.
Empty pizza boxes and Pepsi cans litter the floor of Miami’s Fillmore Theater as weary contestants struggle to keep their eyes open and voices on pitch. It’s Day 3 of The X Factor’s second-season boot camp — and it’s also a reboot camp for the Fox reality competition, which struggled to find its voice after being imported from the U.K. last September.
A new panel of judges enters the theater and takes their seats: acerbic Brit and X Factor creator Simon Cowell, global pop superstar Britney Spears, former Disney star Demi Lovato and record exec L.A. Reid. Even with new table mates, Cowell is still the same old Simon. “Arguably one of the worst things I’ve ever heard,” he tells a group of dejected boys after their performance. “Shambles. It was a joke.”
Are you ready?
Britney Spears has officially signed a deal with The X Factor!
A source confirms to Us Weekly that Spears will join Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid as a judge.
E! News first broke the story Wednesday that the 31-year-old pop superstar has signed a contract with X Factor. “There’s been a lot of back and forth over the past few weeks as they negotiated the small details, but she’s on,” a source told E! News. “It’s all completed and Britney is beyond excited.”
On April 11, a source close to the negotiations told Us the “Till the World Ends” singer will get $16 million for doing the show. “No paperwork has actually been signed yet,” the source explained at the time. “But they finally came to terms. It was a long negotiation . . . Britney was a natural fit.”
An insider now tells E! News, “She can’t wait to sit down next to Simon at the judges’ table and give this everything she’s got. She is excited about showing the world that she can do this, and do this well.”

New York, NY – Pop superstar Britney Spears achieves another benchmark with her current album, Femme Fatale. This week, Spears’ seventh album – which spawned the No. 1 hit “Hold It Against Me” and the Top 5 smash “Till The World Ends”- is certified platinum by the RIAA. This latest news brings Britney’s U.S. albums certifications to the 32 million sales mark.
The certification comes as tickets for her highly anticipated all female Femme Fatale Tour with special guest Nicki Minaj, Jessie and the Toy Boys and Nervo go on sale April 30th. The tour kicks off on June 16th in Sacramento.
Spears’ impressive reach goes beyond the U.S. as fans world wide are embracing her latest project. Femme Fatale has also achieved platinum status in Canada and is gold-certified in the UK, France, Mexico, Czech Republic, Brazil, Korea & Singapore. The current single, “Till The World Ends” is in the Top 10 on iTunes charts in Canada, Mexico, Australia, France, Spain and Denmark and the song ranks in the Top 20 on radio airplay charts across Europe.
With the release of the critically-acclaimed Femme Fatale, Britney has earned more distinctions and set new records: she is the only woman to have six albums debut at No.1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart; she and Mariah Carey are the only artists to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with more than one song; Britney’s one of only seven artists- and just three women- with Hot 100 No. 1’s in three decades; Femme Fatale is one of the Top 10 longest running trending topics on Twitter.
The Toxic hitmaker has been a part of the songwriting process for at least one track on each of her last five discs, contributing the most to her 2003 project In the Zone, including her Madonna duet, Me Against the Music.
Spears is not credited as a writer on any of the tunes from her seventh studio album, prompting some detractors to take aim at the singer for relying on the talents of others to produce hits for her.
But collaborator Heather Bright, who co-wrote Femme Fatale’s Trouble for Me, insists few pop stars actually come up with their own lyrics and Spears should be applauded for not forcing her songwriters into giving her credit just so she can take a cut of the royalties.
In a post on her blog, Bright writes, “I would just like to address one thing! The media is talking trash about how Britney didn’t write any of the songs on her album … HELLO! Wake up everybody! NONE OF THESE ARTISTS WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS!!!!!! (there are a few exceptions … lady gaga, will.i.am/BEP, chris brown is starting to write a lot of his own stuff…)
“Anyway… Britney could have come to me, like all these other A-list artists, and said … ‘Hey, you wanna be on my album? I’m gonna need writing credit for that song AND part of your publishing (royalties) even though I didn’t write anything! And then I’m gonna go on tour and gross $150 million in ticket sales and not give you any of that, even though I’m performing your song!’ I could rattle off a laundry list of artists who I’ve had that conversation with!”
And Bright has nothing but praise for Spears and her creative team.
She adds, “Britney’s one of the few artists I’ve worked with who didn’t try to take something that wasn’t hers. In my experience, from a business standpoint, her entire team is nothing less than a bonafide class act!”
Britney Spears proved to be a Femme Fatale when she hit the stage Friday night in Las Vegas. The pop superstar donned multiple costumes during her high-octane three-song set, and her fans loved every moment of it.
Emerie told MTV News moments after the show: “I love Britney! Everything was perfect. My favorite part was when she performed the song ‘Till the World Ends.’ Anything with Britney is amazing.”
Jewelry designer Heather Bettes added, “It was fantastic. Britney Spears, she looks stellar. She killed it. She really brought it The beading is amazing on her costumes. She looked great. She brought it.”
While fans described Spears’ big show as “awesome,” “sexy” and “the best thing ever,” two die-hards had a personal connection to the show.
“I loved it!” Danielle said of Brit’s performance at Rain nightclub in the Palms Casino and Resort. In fact, she loved it so much because her pal Mark is one of Brit’s dancers. While Mark was one of her favorite parts, she said Britney really shined.
“The very end of the last song [was awesome],” she explained about pop’s reigning queen. “She looked sexy. She’s hot.”
Daniel, who is not only Danielle’s friend but also Mark’s boyfriend, was very excited to see his beau onstage with the star. “He looked so sexy,” he proclaimed, adding that Brit had told the dancers that this show was all about her excited fans. “She wants to please all of her fans. She knocked it out of the box.”
Those good vibes were felt by Britney as well, who tweeted after the show, “OMFG it feels good to be on stage again!!”
For fans who may have missed it, they can check out Spears’ performance in an MTV special airing next week, with a tease dropping Tuesday, the same day as the release of Femme Fatale.
